Thanks for all your responses. Haven't vetted them, but glad to know some exist... now I wonder how many still include other forms of violence against women. So often VAW is used as a trope to convey to audiences how gritty and terrible and lawless the film's world truly is.

Overall, and with caveats, I actually enjoyed Godless, but throughout the show I was regularly reminded of this quote I've used before, "in the game of patriarchy, women aren't the opposing team, they are the ball." Especially at the end, yes, even given how the end plays out.

Rushed into the bedroom after seeing this to tell my wife that we had a new all female western show to watch(cause of their twitter tagline insinuates). She was disappointed she googled it, and although it says "town full of ladies" are really only 8/23 characters are women?

Yeah that really struck me when I watched the first episode. The main parts were still somehow all dudes.

Unforgiven; Tombstone; Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid; Young Guns; Young Guns 2; Pat Garret and Billy the Kid; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; For a Few Dollars More; Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Ned Kelly...there’s quite a few w/ no rape.

Bone Tomahawk; Red River and Rio Bravo too.

It's so disappointing that I can't think of any. Hope you feel better soon, m'dear.pic.twitter.com/jz7sZ3NKJD

Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch does not include rape scenes, though one character’s backstory has mention of sexual violence.

I don't remember there being any rape (though it may have been mentioned in passing for satire) but "Blazing Saddles" Is a great 'Western' (without spoiling the ending). It has some female characters and it has a black protagonist. Also, those racist to him are seen as foolish.

There’s a part where Tagert says about the women-folk “we rape the shit out of them at the number 6 dance later on!!” Truly one of the greatest movies of all time!

I vaguely remember that quote, it's been a while since I saw the film. As I said, there may have been a line for satire. Still a swell movie.

Very curious how you feel about the end...was glad to see Merritt Wever get a juicy role though.

excellent question I wish screen writers were daring enough to avoid that trope!
