As I said on the podcast I found S01 of The Expanse deeply boring. The world development is interesting but the character motivations & relationship building are weak. The detective falls in love/becomes obsessed with the missing woman? Holden is aggressively generic. Etc.

Well, two types. One is the typical Star Trek fare, such as Babylon 5 or Deep Space Nine. Those tend to have deep storylines, but they're a major time sink. The second option is anime, which focuses on drama and character development.

Oh sure sure but I'm wondering about newer shows. I feel like we don't have a lot of options for good new scifi.

There really aren't any right now. Obscure ones for you might be Darker than Black or Code Gease: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Code Geas is actually going to be getting a new series late this year I think. So if you haven't seen that, now's a good time.
