I really love @bojackhorseman but the casting of Diane, a Vietnamese American, with a white actor was very disappointing. Glad to see active conversation around issues of whitewashing in Hollywood and hope new showrunners learn from these mistakes.http://uproxx.com/tv/bojack-horseman-diversity-diane-interview-raphael-bob-waksberg-alison-brie/2/ …

While I speak out about whitewashing in live-action film and television, I do feel like voice acting for animation is different as the nature of the medium allows actors to play a wide variety of characters, even if they aren't what that character is IRL.

Most boys (Bart Simpson, Timmy Turner, etc.) are voiced by older women for example, mostly due to the risk of a boy's voice changing during production.. Phil LaMarr, an African-American, voiced an Asian man in Samurai Jack. Most women voice young children and babies.

With voice acting, it's all about the voice and the performance. It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like. The beauty of voiceover (and theatre) is that you can be anybody. I could be wrong, but from what I know about VA, looks genuinely don't matter.

That being said, there could be a discussion for a more grounded, down-to-earth series like BoJack Horseman that's grounded in realism (despite having anthropomorphic animals). In such a series, I do see why it rubs some the wrong way that a white woman voices an Asian character.

Well, that's like saying that a voice-actress has to be depressed and fat in order voice a depressed and fat charachter, which is just stupid. It DOES NOT matter if the voice-acress for Diane comes from nigeria or japan or sweden, if she can play the part, she can play the part!

With all the aspiring actors/actresses it's weird how they can't find 1 veitnamese actress that wanted the role. It's stuff like this where you can clearly see the biased desire for white people and cultural appropriation in Hollywood.

That was actually a really good discussion. Very real in the sense that he wasn't tripping over himself to apologize, but rather exploring how he got there and how to avoid it. That's where the real change comes in.

What difference does that make to the show? Why do you think she is unsuitable for that role? Is it because she’s white? That’d be a very racist reason. How about when Samuel L Jackson was cast to voice a white guy in The Boondocks. Were you disappointed then?

Being Vietnamese is not Diane's charcter. She a uptight, over the top liberal who can't switch off which leads her down the path of self destruction, just like Bojack, Mr. Peanutbutter, Princess Carolyn and all the others. Her being Vietnamese gets mentioned maybe twice so far.

Playing devil's advocate Kimberly Brooks (An African-American VA) played Ashley in Mass Effect. The character is a different race than Kimberly. She may not have the same experiences as the character but isn't that what the script is for. As long as there's no active whitewashingpic.twitter.com/KVZybXhTaL
