Always weirds me out when it uses "landmarks" instead of streets. I thought maybe it was to help with navigation. The point you brought up makes way more sense and is super gross.

Seems like it! If Google were more committed to better directions over product placement, they'd've said "turn right at the fast food building on the corner".
-
I think their approach is spot on. We are reading street signs all the time..I tell people to turn left at Bojangles when I’m giving people directions to my house
-
In fact, we recognize landmarks easier than street names, unless the street names become the landmarks

Oh wow, I might have to switch to google maps! I’d love to have landmarks like that instead of looking for Tony street signs and shit

I don't know, but given California's terrible road design, large identifiable structures are easier to understand than run-of-the-mill street corners/street name. So it may be researched based UX that just happens to double as product placement...

Maybe because landmarks stand out more than streetsigns?

Mine did this too but with a burger king. I think they are beta testing landmarks or something

Google maps does that for all kind of businesses: fast food restaurants, churches, banks, etc. It's just easier to see on the street while driving

.....You do realise that when you ask real people for directions they do the same thing right? People will include visible landmarks like local bussiness, featurse like statues or well kown buildings. Maybe their trying to emulate that?
-
Navigating by landmarks is something real people do while driving, do the powers or reason and observation not exist in your world view?
