Living in patriarchy is walking home alone at night when a man starts talking to you, ignoring him doesn't help, he keeps pace & talking even tho you are clearly not interested. Then having to duck in a doorway hoping he doesn't see you and harass you more and/or follow you home.

I remember a night in NYC when I tried to walk home and a man followed me for 20 blocks refusing to leave me alone and I was so terrified I thought I was going to die ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This is so quotidian that I've never even mentioned it to anyone before

It really is. And I think it's important to share these stories *because* they are so ordinary and commonplace, and deeply gendered (and racialized). I couldn't begin to count the amount of times I've been legitimately fearful for my safety just walking home.

It's amazing to me how many men are like BLOWN AWAY by these stories, which only makes me think we should tell them more Terror should not be the baseline experience of being female but it's so common that it requires specific and unrelenting intervention

What's also interesting to me about the men who are surprised this happens is their assumption about the intention of catcallers. As if they are just "flirting" or "hitting" on us when it's neither of those but an exploitation of power and dominance.

yeah, it's the extreme good faith assumptions about men by men versus literally just trying to be alive as a human woman while you are continuously treated like a thing to be consumed

Sharing doesn’t always help. I literally stopped speaking to a guy because we were discussing catcalling and street harassment, and he refused to believe it was real because he’d never seen it. He thought women made up the stories to sound more desirable.

I mean, that sounds like an awful person? It's complicated, always, but I do think it tells us a lot about fundamental misogyny in terms of whether or not someone you talk to will literally believe you when you speak about personal experience or not That's kind of a baseline

If you aren't willing to believe me when I talk about my experiences then how do we even talk to each other ever

I mean, absolutely, which is why I stopped speaking to the guy. But it’s wild to me that it even happened
