To the men in my mentions trying to give me advice such as, "just talk to the street harassers and tell them you're not interested": FUCK OFF This is not something you live with every damn day of your life. If you want to be an ally just shut up and listen.

I remember a night in NYC when I tried to walk home and a man followed me for 20 blocks refusing to leave me alone and I was so terrified I thought I was going to die ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This is so quotidian that I've never even mentioned it to anyone before
-
It really is. And I think it's important to share these stories *because* they are so ordinary and commonplace, and deeply gendered (and racialized). I couldn't begin to count the amount of times I've been legitimately fearful for my safety just walking home.
-
It's amazing to me how many men are like BLOWN AWAY by these stories, which only makes me think we should tell them more Terror should not be the baseline experience of being female but it's so common that it requires specific and unrelenting intervention
-
What's also interesting to me about the men who are surprised this happens is their assumption about the intention of catcallers. As if they are just "flirting" or "hitting" on us when it's neither of those but an exploitation of power and dominance.
-
yeah, it's the extreme good faith assumptions about men by men versus literally just trying to be alive as a human woman while you are continuously treated like a thing to be consumed
-
Sharing doesn’t always help. I literally stopped speaking to a guy because we were discussing catcalling and street harassment, and he refused to believe it was real because he’d never seen it. He thought women made up the stories to sound more desirable.
-
I mean, that sounds like an awful person? It's complicated, always, but I do think it tells us a lot about fundamental misogyny in terms of whether or not someone you talk to will literally believe you when you speak about personal experience or not That's kind of a baseline
-
If you aren't willing to believe me when I talk about my experiences then how do we even talk to each other ever

Great story.......this creepy stuff happens to everyone....but its not patriarchy......just creeps and possibly a criminal...
-
Patriarchy gives them the sense of safety to do those thing and that they won't face consequences.
-
Really?? Police and social consequences exist.
-
Like police and society gives a shit about rape victims
-
Of course they do. Because its a crime. Other men don't like those 'creeps'. Suppose it depends on your friendship circles.
-
I don't know if you live in a magical country where everything is fair but the majority of the world treats assault victims like shit.
-
The west is imperfect but so are people. Life is hard no way around that.

1. Sucks you went through that, that guy is an asshole 2. You are not living in a patriarchy
-
Sucks that you're a complete asshole.
-
I hope getting that out of your system helped make your day better, friend
if you want to discuss why you dislike my post I would be happy to. -
Hey what percentage of the population in this country male?
-
Around 49% I believe, why do you ask?
-
Cool, cool. Okay what percentage of Congress is male?
-
Ah, but that’s a common logical fallacy that is quite foolish. Gender disparity in certain occupations does not immediately imply it is due to bias/patriarchy/discrimination. It’s part of it, sure, but data indicates it’s quite a small part.
-
Best example of this are the Scandinavian countries. They are the most egalitarian societies ever created in the history of humanity, and the gender differences in occupation choice is the LARGEST in the world. It proves that equality of opportunity =/= equality of outcome.
