I don't know. Human culture has never been an isolated experience, even when we try to make it one. The idea of closing off elements of which we claim some sort of ownership by virtue of birth, seems backwards and needlessly isolationist.

I think you should’ve stopped with your first sentence, thought upon that, and applied it to the situation. Who gets praise for wearing this and who gets criticized/discriminated?
-
I don't know that anyone gets praise for wearing it, but Madonna apparently gets criticised for it. I can't really think of any good reason the wearing of that assortment should bring either upon anyone.

Narcissism + cultural appropriation + erasure = does not a tribute make. Aretha deserves so much more than that mess

Watch people who don't even know what specifically she's appropriating or really even ever gave a shit about her to being with say she was just paying homage to [insert wrong culture here]

I love Madonna, but... wtf? Regarding the speech, I get the feeling that the reason she made it all about herself was because she didn't actually know Aretha that well so she didn't really know what to say. In which case, why did they have her give the speech in fhe first place?
-
Like, why not an actual black artist who was actually influenced by Aretha? Literally anyone else.

Thanks for calling this out, Anita. You’re awesome.

Why is this something to praise someone over? So she is wearing something from another culture why is this anything to care about?
