I wouldn't have even answered or bothered with the dude but I was caught off guard and didn't really know what he was getting at. I had also just spent 30 minutes bearing witness to three white cops pulling over a black man and ugh, that's its own whole thing.

I agree. Just to play devils advocate here though, if he’d have commented in as non threatening a way as possible, on your hair or eyes instead, would that still be considered harassment? Is there ever an appropriate way to approach/compliment a stranger one finds attractive?

Would you feel comfortable if another dude said that stuff to you? Now imagine knowing that if you reject these “compliments” there’s a high chance of aggression. That’s why women hate this stuff. If you find a stranger hot, try making normal conversation. It isn’t hard.

Yeah, if you’d the thread a little further you’d see that’s what I’ve done in the past, I’ve never complimented a stranger’s looks in my life. More just intrigued if there’s a feminist consensus on what’s acceptable as didn’t have any luck googling it.

I literally am wearing a cheap ring on my left hand rn because it's the only way to get dudes to leave me the fuck alone. When are dudes gonna get it through their heads that it's not a compliment and we do not want their unsolicited comments?

I'm a guy and wouldn't do this. It's inappropriate and creepy. I wouldn't even initiate non-sexual small talk with a woman if she looked like she had somewhere to be.

The fact that you see those words in my argument is your own damn problem. Men are vocal idiots when it comes to shit they like and don't like. That is all i was referring to. But reading words for what they mean is for smart people.

So you would agree then, that men doing that is... a bad thing and we should work to stop it?

Doing what? Stop bringing down the human race by thinking we are Neanderthals. Men are stronger and have a bigger brain so it is less prone to concussion. Women have a higher pain tolerance. Human sexes are dimorphic for a reason. Survival. That is still a thing in modern times.

What an insanely stupid argument. First of all men do not harass women on the street "for survival" it's not some evolutionary coding, and even if it were we suppress "evolutionary coding" all the time because we live in a society and not in the wild.

Lol and yet women probably do it equally or more then men but it's not considered harassment in your eyes. Definition harassment: aggressive pressure or intimidation. Yup that one compliment was an act of aggression.

Seriously. How would a man respectfully approach a lady and express his interest in you. Can you give me a scenario that would result in a man walking away with your (actual) phone number. I see a lot of criticism, but no actual helpful lessons for men.

Phil, in all honesty, what you don’t, can’t appreciate, not being a woman, is that ANY approach by an unknown man is inherently threatening. If we’re uninterested men often go hostile, or even violent. THIS is why any approach by an unknown man is a potential problem & unwelcome.

Is it always seen as a problem? I have a daughter. I want her to be safe, but I don’t want her to be afraid to engage with people. Is there no context you find acceptable for a man to approach a woman? I have never been hostile over a rejection. I appreciate the honesty.

Your daughter is safer being approached at public gatherings- parties, bars, museums, work- where you may have common friends or be introduced. Even that’s no guarantee, but it’s much safer than an anonymous “admirer” on the street. We’re smaller, you’re stronger. We’re at risk.
