But here's the thing -- these conspiracy theories they've been spreading about me for six years seem ludicrous on the surface but they actually work to infect the cultural understanding of me and my work on a much larger scale than their tiny little woman-hating communities.

These conspiracy theories range from: I'm embezzling money, I never finished my kickstarter project to bleaching my skin to appear more white and apparently now progressive I'm somehow responsible for the death of an activist.

Here's a recent example: an academic I met at an event gave me a copy of her book in which she wrote a section about me and was curious what I thought about it. It was a book about feminist discourses and overall she seemed supportive. I had a bit of time so I gave it a read.

It was enraging to read for many reasons including the lack of basic fact checking but the real problem was she literally quoted GamerGate conspiracies about me as if they were well researched facts... in her academic book!
Show this thread -
Her defense was that she quoted journalists -- as if there aren't a whole slew of journalists who are fully supportive of GamerGate and never do any actual research. This is someone who is SUPPORTIVE OF MY WORK and she bought into these myths.

These myths are so easy to dispel with just a few google searches but it doesn't matter. These harassers are so loud and persistent that when you hear something enough times, the public starts to believe they are facts.

I used to be friends with a girl who bought into all the BS conspiracy theories about you, a current friend had to set her straight on it and I'm just wanting to tell her "What are you getting out of siding with people who only use you as their shield?" It's really sad.
-
I think my ex might have believed some of it too, though she never thought harassing women in the industry was okay. I remember trying to talk about Anita and Zoe Quinn and kind of getting shut down. I probably believed some of the rumors at some point too.
-
Considering the perso in question fails to deliver kickstarter goals, calls Human Garbage to critics and steals/lies for her "projects"......your ex was right. No wonder she's your ex if you're still defending the biggest scammers of the industry even after 4 years :3

I have to admit I didn’t like u before, based solely on YouTuber vids I saw criticizing you. One day hearing ur STD Recap Podcast, I was hooked and really enjoyed listening to you. It makes me sad how easily manipulated we all are without giving others a chance or fact-checking.
-
I hear ya. I’ve had a similar experience listening to the wild interpretations her detractors spew.
-
Same. It warms my heart to see that I am not the only one who went through this. Maybe there is hope

Yeah I agree. Who knew that being a shitty, ignorant, opportunistic and inconsequential airhead has consequences? Nice talk.

Bingo -
@YouTube’s algorithm favors pro-GG and Anita conspiracy content, pushing it into feeds without any thought that these videos are dangerous. -
Yup I used to fall asleep to feminist youtube channels, but since youtube doesn't just autoplay any channel's content in order, I kept waking up to antifeminist videos. Not pleasant.
