Quite disappointed in #SoloAStarWarsStory. I feel like it's by far the weakest of the new Star Wars films. Spoilers ahead.

The story structure was mostly fine but the dialogue was really rough. I understood why Ehrenreich was cast because he was able to nail a lot of the Harrison Ford mannerisms but I don't think he was strong enough to lead the film.

The first main character to die is a black woman (how the hell you gonna kill off Thandie Newton in the first act??) and then they barely acknowledged or grieved her death.

The comic relief is a robot who is basically a mockery of feminism and activist culture.

Then you've got a land of mute, scared brown folks who are just exotic, gritty, background decoration.

They try and be surprising by making Enfys Nest, the leader of the pirates a young woman of colour (played by Erin Kellyman who I definitely want to see more of!) but she doesn't really do anything. Han is the one who comes up with and executes the plan to help fund the rebellion

The movie is trying to play with themes of resisting oppression and fighting for justice by showing the origins of the Rebel Alliance and having a droid uprising but it's just sort of wedged in as an awkward side note instead of being a more important plot point.

Why do you have to analyse everything by how many minorities are in the film? I get why diversity is a positive thing but you needlessly obsess over everyone’s race and gender and how decent each race and genders characters are. Give it a rest.

Oh yeah I can't stop talking about L3 being in the sunken place. I didn't realize that's what you meant. And Rey has it now. Every time that ship is passed on in an act of fanservice, there'll still be slaves in it.

How quickly Lando went from appearing to care for L3 to turning her into a SpaceTomTom update was creepy, like oh ok I guess she doesn't get a say in it.

In a world where TLJ was liked for challenging SW conventions and paving the way forward, I would think a movie should just address our favorite characters' involvement with slavery. But I'm sad to say I think dumb nerds will just pretend it didn't happen.

I’m noticing a pattern of intense focus on the gender and race of the characters, instead of what they do in the story, which comes second. As though it were an afterthought of yours. This speaks volumes.

You know the movie is called Solo right...as in the story of Han Solo right. So you arguments fall a little short since this was not Star Wars Rebel beginings. Rogue One speaks more to that then this.
