The story structure was mostly fine but the dialogue was really rough. I understood why Ehrenreich was cast because he was able to nail a lot of the Harrison Ford mannerisms but I don't think he was strong enough to lead the film.

The first main character to die is a black woman (how the hell you gonna kill off Thandie Newton in the first act??) and then they barely acknowledged or grieved her death.

The comic relief is a robot who is basically a mockery of feminism and activist culture.

Then you've got a land of mute, scared brown folks who are just exotic, gritty, background decoration.

They try and be surprising by making Enfys Nest, the leader of the pirates a young woman of colour (played by Erin Kellyman who I definitely want to see more of!) but she doesn't really do anything. Han is the one who comes up with and executes the plan to help fund the rebellion

The movie is trying to play with themes of resisting oppression and fighting for justice by showing the origins of the Rebel Alliance and having a droid uprising but it's just sort of wedged in as an awkward side note instead of being a more important plot point.

It was definitely tragic what they did to L3. The first character to care about enslavement of droids, and her fate is to be unceremoniously enslaved to the ship computer. Would have been easy to fix her body and explain the Falcon's hyperspace computers a different way.

Sounds all the more disappointing considering a) L3 is the first female-coded droid we've seen in the films (I haven't seen the shows) & b) Droids being slaves has always been an awkwardly fascinating elephant in the room that deserves its own film.

Wasn't there a female-coded protocol droid at the start of Phantom Menace?
-
True. I'd forgotten about her!

Oh well, I guess it goes to show that social justice doesn't pay (unless you're using it to scam people out of their money by making baseless accusations of sexism towards towards video games of course).
