For the historical record, I did try to get Google to index _ as a separator so we'd process the web as it existed. But it wasn't a high priority request, so it didn't make it across the finish line. :(

We should do a panel on this sometime. When Overture bought Altavista and AlltheWeb/FAST, then Yahoo bought Overture, it combined a lot of search outlets. With fewer targets, that also accelerated SEO attention on Google.

Remember how many sites faked the vanity URL? they had their real unique ID in the URL which oftentimes lead to phishers exploiting by changing the vanity portion of the URL to whatever they wanted.
