Yep, the context makes perfect sense! I think it’s hard (never having worked at one of the anchor platform companies) to imagine creating strategy from a position of infinite abundance. Scarcity is a blessing.

Oh they never do the minimal work, no. But they often do the highest leverage thing where non-code parts of the product do most of the lifting. So, huge investment in (e.g.) custom ARM silicon, battery tech, and marketing to make iPad possible. But smallest code delta for iOS.

There were various factions at Microsoft. The obvious thing to do was for Windows Phone to puff up and become our tablet story (which is what Android/iOS did). However Windows team wanted to "own" that space so bolted on touch to a desktop OS blinded by their historical context.

In hindsight although this was a disaster it paved the way for losing Ballmer, gaining Satya and putting an end to the company's Windows-centric focus.
