For me, it was around the late 80s/early 90s, which seems to be pretty consistent in these replies. But yo, there are a lot of you who were calling us "Oriental" up until the 2000s and even beyond.

I should say, it wasn't that I realized it was wrong to refer to myself as "Oriental," as much as it was an embrace of being "Asian."

Being old doesn't excuse you to use outdated or inappropriate terminology. But I'll admit that when I hear older Asians refer to themselves as "Oriental," I give them a pass. Shrug.

Totally. I'm from California, but went to college in Minnesota in the mid 90s. The casual racism was overwhelming and soul crushing.
