@newtgingrich recently published an op-ed on the right-wing organization @theammind’s website claiming there is a “Soros cover-up” regarding the philanthropists' support of progressive prosecutors. Let me tell you why he is wrong. 1/8https://americanmind.org/post/the-soros-cover-up/ …

Soros has long been a topic of conspiratorial rants from the right. Gingrich’s ultimate goal is to attack progressive prosecutors fighting to reform the legal system. It is a thinly veiled attempt to stroke fear and scare people away from data-backed, equity-minded change. 2/8

Gingrich attacks @DA_LarryKrasner, @SAKimFoxx, @chesaboudin and others that are instituting important policies to combat the criminal legal system’s inherent biases and disproportionate impact of Black people and poor communities. 3/8 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/08/25/black-prosecutors-11-ideas-393577 …

Progressive DAs are making communities safer for all, including those the system has never protected. Gingrich's claims of rising crime rates can be explained by #COVID, high unemployment, disruption of cultural norms and a tense political environment. 4/8 https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/09/14/crime-increase-pandemic-protests/ …

According to an analysis by the @MarshallProj and @voxdotcom, cities across the country saw a decrease in most types of crime, including burglary and theft in early March, and only after the pandemic began did more violent crimes increase. 5/8 https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/09/25/is-violent-crime-rising-in-cities-like-trump-says-well-it-s-complicated …

In addition, while Gingrich and the rest of Trump's cronies preach “law and order,” crime trends are shaped by the police and merely reflect crime reports collected by law enforcement agencies, that we know have intense bias and prejudice. 6/8https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/many-americans-are-convinced-crime-is-rising-in-the-u-s-theyre-wrong/ …

Ultimately, Ginchrich’s attempt to blame Soros and progressive prosecutors for high crime rates and twist the facts with half-truths is just another ploy to keep power in the hands of the white male establishment. 7/8

It won’t work. We’ve got their number and progressive prosecutors will not stop fighting for equity and fairness in what is supposed to be a just system. 8/8
