For legacy stuff I usually use "file scanner" (fs.exe) by SMT - it can handle most of the old generic/non-tricky packers for DOS and Win32 (has a DOS emulator inside)https://defacto2.net/f/ad27a66

All the protectors listed there are obsolete these days. Except for Denuvo/VMProtect/Themida that can offer a little more resistance. Regarding malware crypters/packers, they are just shitty.

It seems that the new trend is to implement software protectors similar to Epona but I haven't seen too many examples. Software protections doesn't look very interesting these days (from the commercial point of view).
