Many health officials say their No. 1 worry is still the flu. But Carolyn Kleve is scared of both. She's a junior at ASU, 13 weeks pregnant and works with 5yr olds as she trains to be a teacher. "Have I already come into contact with it? Who knows."

I was assigned to cover chalking at Iowa State U, so I chalked: “Talk to the New York Times about chalking,”on the sidewalk. It felt good. Like I was exercising my First Amendment rights. But also illicit. I was not arrested, thankfully.

I think it was minus 2. People were passing out chemical hand warmers. I still have mine. Souvenir. And the kids were still campaigning for their candidates. So sweet. There’s hope for the future!

Some outtakes from my time photographing the Iowa State campus at the absolute coldest possible temperatures, for this story about the university's new rules against chalking.

But is banning political chalking the way to do it?

The atmosphere has become so tense that “friend groups don’t talk about politics anymore,” said Taylor Blair, a student. “If a friend loves Trump, it might be hard on you. I think this election is going to be about really mostly what can we do to make the election less toxic.”

Now, they are immediately power-washed, to the relief of some and dismay of others. As the presidential primary season heats up, Iowa State has effectively banned political messaging written in chalk on the campus sidewalks, said to be hateful, hurtful and bigoted.

For maximum exposure, students would chalk in the intersections of frequently traversed pathways between landmarks like the administration building and the library. Messages would be piled one on top of the other, with crossouts and edits, and left to fade away in the rain

College chalking was part of the folksy political spirit in Iowa, where civic duty is a sacred value and people are about to go to the caucuses and try to convince their neighbors to vote for their presidential candidate.

Chalk is essential for hopscotch and sidewalk doodling but what about politicking and slurs? ⁦⁩ explores speech in the form of chalk.
