We’ve been getting criticism for holding an internal report until it was more favorable for us and then releasing it. Getting criticism isn’t unfair. But it’s worth taking a closer look -- and making note of some of the components of the story.

News outlets wrote about the south Florida doctor that died. When the coroner released a cause of death, the Chicago Tribune appended an update to its original story; NYTimes did not. Would it have been right to remove the Times story because it was COVID misinfo?

Of course not. No one is actually suggesting this and neither am I. But it does illustrate just how difficult it is to define misinformation.

In his Harper’s essay Joe Bernstein makes the point more articulately than I ever could, saying the terms misinformation and disinformation are tossed around so casually as to be almost meaningless, beyond being “simply jargon for ‘things I disagree with.’”

Gilad Edelman in Wired a couple weeks ago described it this way in noting the vaccine hesitant could be responding to real, if rare, reports of side effects or worse: “Misinterpretation is not the same thing as misinformation, and this is not merely a semantic distinction.”

It matters for underscoring this: oddly, many point to the credibility of the Q1 report while questioning credibility of the Q2 report. But who's noted the NYT's own reporting is mirrored in the “shelved” FB report and that it's cited as evidence of COVID misinfo?

On the question of the unreleased report from earlier this year and why we held it. We ended up holding it because there were key fixes to the system we wanted to make.

We’re guilty of cleaning up our house a bit before we invited company. We’ve been criticized for that; and again, that’s not unfair.

The company claimed to be “the most transparent platform on the internet” while knowingly withholding information from earlier this year because it was a bad look for the company. Come on, Andy.

Are you kidding?! I've reported outright fabrication, stuff that's been debunked by reliable fact checking sites, and FB says "does not violate community standards." Come on. You've been terrible at this. You just hate admitting you've been terrible at it.

Yup that’s Facebook. Just a regular guy slightly embarassed about his messy apartment. Wants to tidy up a little before company comes over. Totes relatable.

I still have pending Covid-19 misinformation reports not answered and still up. Not even a dumb little "misinformation" tag.

Andy, what were the fixes? Can you be more specific? From what I know from reporting on this, the Q1 report was worked on for a long time, it was polished and ready to go, and the data was good. It was killed last minute.

We’re guilty of spreading vast amounts of election, covid, and vaccine misinformation, playing a part in genocide in Myanmar, letting terrorists livestream attacks on the Capitol and trying to hide as much as we can. We’ve been criticized for that; and again, that’s not unfair.
