Things I hold to be true #1 You are not your user, so stop designing for yourself. Understanding what your users need and communicating that around the organisation is super important.

In short, the digital arm of the BBC is a public good and is fundamentally different for a large, VC funded, surveillance capitalism Silicon Valley tech company, and any comparisons to such are both misleading and reductive.

Whatever political background you come from, if you’re part of the UK digital economy you really need to let your voice be heard on both the historical and continued importance of the BBC to the UK creative and tech sector.

The digital arm of the BBC is like a mangrove forrest. It’s an ecosystem nursery that supports young talent and allows the tech industry coral reef to grow. It’s not a tech unicorn (fish) itself but has helped create the environment for UK unicorn (fish) to thrive.

As such if the really wanted to promote UK digital and creative industries around the world, they’d use the BBC as a huge success story. One of successive government policy done right, rather than take every opportunity to demean a global brand and belittle the UK.

What’s more the BBC and the people who advanced it’s digital practice, have a huge standing around the world.

Without the BBC, I doubt LONDON would be anywhere near as strong a tech hub as it is, thanks to the net work of talented individuals and companies it’s help train and support over the years.

The BBCs remit to engage with the wider digital sector also kick started numerous agencies, product companies and creative brands, helping the while digital sector flourish.

More than that, the BBC has grown and fostered some of our best digital talent, many of whole are new in integral roles in large tech companies around the world.

For a start it’s untrue. I can’t think of any other company or institution in the UK that’s done more to advance digital. From one of the first corporate websites, through to the creation of iPlayer (which happened several years before Netflix started streaming).

May I just say that the current narrative coming out of Downing Street about the BBC effectively not adapting to digital isn’t particularly helpful for the UKs digital economy or standing in the world.

Makes sense. I mean we all remember that time when the ruling government tried to undermine the Blockbuster business model because they were worried that the DVDs being rented painted them in a bad light.

My favorite moment is when after I speak at a conference and then people come tell me I’m great and I pretend to be humble but I secretly obviously agree with them and start to wonder why more people aren’t coming up to me.

Most modern digital product design I see is like fast food. Poor ingredients, mass produced, all tastes the same, full of sugar, designed to to momentarily satiate but never nourishing.

Learning that the sold a combined phone and broadband package to an elderly relative who’s never owned a computer, let alone used the internet, and clearly didn’t understand what they’d been sold. Nice one folks. Stay classy!
