Thomas is a freak of nature. He released his new DBMS this year while also doing the following: + Teaching 2 classes per semester + Mentoring 10 PhD students + Dean of Graduate Studies at TUM + Consulting for HyPer@Tableau + Writing many SIGMOD/VLDB papers + Raising 3 children

He does all this and still is able to program at least *eight* hours a day on his DBMS as a professor. For Umbra, Thomas has written his own version of make and regression test infrastructure. His students then wrote their own version of clandy-tidy to match Thomas' code style.

Anybody that has met Thomas can attest that he is also one of the nicest and down to earth people in the world. He is indeed my favorite German. His papers are worth checking out and I cover many of them in my class: https://dblp.org/pers/hd/n/Neumann_0001:Thomas …

Doesn’t seem to be Open Source. Doesn’t seem to care about building a sustainable community. Lone genius approach doesn’t scale IMHO. But happy to be proven wrong.
