So I was slightly involved with this story: https://twitter.com/Werner/status/1054901529478459392 … TLDR: I've read the internal Amazon document in the CNBC story. @Werner is correct. When I told the reporter that it wasn't a big deal he called me on the phone and flipped out.

Never let facts interrupt a "good story.” Tried to help reporter get it right, but clickbait won (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/23/amazon-move-off-oracle-caused-prime-day-outage-in-warehouse.html …). Our Fulfillment Centers have migrated 92% of DBs from Oracle to Aurora with better avail, less bugs and patches, less troubleshooting, less hw cost. More: pic.twitter.com/cwM5SHai2p

Two weeks ago this reporter reached out to the top DB profs (@joe_hellerstein, @franklinmj, @pateljm) + junior people like me asking for help with a story about Amazon Aurora. His original email said that he was looking for helping on understanding database terms.pic.twitter.com/OrkN5F1szZ

Maybe I was naive, but this seemed innocuous and I agreed to speak with him the next day. I have helped out tech reporters before and I enjoy explaining DB concepts to non-experts. He didn't know that I was in the same room at that time with the other DB profs that he emailed

He then sent me an internal Amazon CoE (Correction of Error) that this story is based on. Since I was in meetings in Seattle, I didn't have time to look at it. Everyone told me that the reporter was likely blowing the story out of proportion & recommended that I not get involved

The next morning I read the PDF alone in my hotel room. The crux of it was on a hiccup when txns invoked SAVEPOINT in Postgres. The reporter was claiming that switching from Oracle to Aurora was a fatal mistake because Aurora is inferior and/or Amazon was not prepared

I responded to him with my assessment and told him that I didn't want to be involved in his story. To the best of my understanding, there is not significant difference about how Oracle does SAVEPOINTs versus Postgres.pic.twitter.com/nUlqbigCgs

What happened next was crazy. He called me up at 6am PST and started shouting at me. He called me a liar and said that I was being paid by Amazon to run cover about the outage. We yelled at each other for 30 minutes while I sat in my hotel in my underwear. It was awesome.pic.twitter.com/jbKHL06hYL

He kept telling me that I was "on the record". I told him that I didn't want to be involved because calling me a liar was unprofessional. I don't think that he understood what Aurora is. He seemed to be confused about why I kept mentioning Postgres instead of Aurora.

So I agree with @Werner that this is a non-story. Oracle and Postgres are both solid DBMSs. Notice how he has no quotes from DB people. And for the record, I am not on Amazon's payroll. They gave @danavanaken credits for her research & we are thankful:https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/tuning-your-dbms-automatically-with-machine-learning/ …
