Got promoted to a full professor at CMU:) Thanks to my amazing students, collaborators, and my mentors. CMU is a remarkable place, but what makes it truly unique is its brilliant students! Hard to find a better place to do ML and AI.

Major triumph: Our new DBMS already supports storing strings with 💩. Props to + Amadou Ngom + +

This is a great paper from . It breaks down and evaluates all the tricks from the last decade for in-memory concurrency control research.

Anybody that has met Thomas can attest that he is also one of the nicest and down to earth people in the world. He is indeed my favorite German. His papers are worth checking out and I cover many of them in my class:

He does all this and still is able to program at least *eight* hours a day on his DBMS as a professor. For Umbra, Thomas has written his own version of make and regression test infrastructure. His students then wrote their own version of clandy-tidy to match Thomas' code style.

Thomas is a freak of nature. He released his new DBMS this year while also doing the following: + Teaching 2 classes per semester + Mentoring 10 PhD students + Dean of Graduate Studies at TUM + Consulting for HyPer@Tableau + Writing many SIGMOD/VLDB papers + Raising 3 children

This is Thomas Neumann: People outside of academia may not know but he is probably the #1 DB systems researcher in the world. He sold his last DBMS (HyPer) to Tableau: He just announced his new DBMS Umbra:

Thomas Neumann's reactions after Andy tells him about trying to bribe the CMU CS dept chair with fake money.

your painting found its way into the poshest part of London: South Kensington (the building on the right is the Iraqi embassy, V&A is just around the corner). Note to your students: Maybe he doesn’t need to be stabbed but could you send over an ear?

I also gave a guest lecture in Thomas' DB class. I had to tone down the amount of "Andy" from my tour talk to accommodate a German audience. I still need to record my lecture for yesterday's CMU class too.

Yes! I rode the slide! Thomas told me that the German gov't requires every new academic building to set aside some amount of the construction budget for art. So the slide technically counts as art.

Whirlwind single day visit to Munich. First stop is TUM with Thomas Neumann. Their CS building is massive. This is the birthplace of the HyPer DBMS project: – mjesto: Technische Universität München (TUM) - Campus Garching
