Tiny mundane future-is-here: was just traveling in Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. I was dreading the hassle of four different currencies in two weeks… but I never needed cash once! Everything took card. First time that's happened on a big trip like this for me.

It's almost out of necessesity! Meanwhile a number of countries in the common euro are very cash-culture, maybe because they can

Yeah, I've found most of western Europe to be very cash-culture.

I actually had problems in Denmark recently because I needed cash for the first time in several years (apart from a New York trip)
I have spent much of the last five weeks in New Zealand (travelling back & forth to Australia). Have specifically avoided all cash, doing everything with cards in both countries. Has been easy. Only struck one food vendor where it was not possible & simply changed vendors.

Yeah, New Zealand is well ahead of curve partly because it is the early test market for many technology companies.

I did a similar trip a couple of months ago (Copenhagen, Finland, Norway & Sweden), and it was great to need cash indeed! Just one place was cash-only but it was a fish truck at the port in Norway and they took my euros 😃

and it’s the same in Barcelona, where I pay almost everything with card (I mean, even the bread that costs 0,90€).
On the other hand Japan was a big surprise for me, I came thinking I’d use the card everywhere but, surprise, you need cash all the time 🤷🏻♂️
