Getting fairly addicted to Anki as a result of this twitter thread from

& few posts I've encountered in the past gwern.net/Spaced-repetit. Was easier than I expected to learn lots of countries/states/flags. Wish there were more "open-sourced" anki decks out there.

I found myself wishing for good open-source decks initially too, but I’ve found the act of making the deck is pretty important to encoding the knowledge thoroughly, at least for me.

Apart from spaced repetition the other really big win in memory comes from finding more elaborate methods for encoding. Making Anki cards (rather than using another person's deck) is a great prod to elaborate encoding. So making decks seems like a feature, rather than a bug.

One other point, which I almost hesitate to mention - it seems kind of pretentious. But I think of the way you write cards as almost a "theory of understanding". Someone with a good theory will make really good cards that help your future self a lot.
