I’m 40 years late to the party, but I can attest that Jaynes’s “On the Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind” is a truly wild read. The argument is like a beautiful, somehow familiar, yet totally alien cathedral; one wants to study the architecture.
