this is why I am not as opposed to teaching kids "how" to do problems b4 "why". Why can be difficult to understand without knowing how 1st.

Being able to coherently explain how you do what you do does seem like a rare skill at any age...

Worked on a similar project at Berkeley CS and found that a lot of idk etc( non answers) come from students not wanting to type thing out

Yes, that’s a totally plausible explanation. We’re planning to repeat in a graded-at-school context, which will hopefully mitigate somewhat.
