Engineering is about evolutionary improvement until you hit a local maxima. Is it possible to make things better w/o first making it worse?

IMO there is an argument to be made that we should allow for more worse solutions to explore options that let us break out of local maxima.

It seems like maybe part of this is seeing what's essentially bad vs incidentally bad. e.g. early React without JSX transform
(if I may) this seems related to the Innovator’s Dilemma.
