do you know of any good ways one OS X app to monitor whether another is beach balling? I can modify source to both.

Have one send a heartbeat to another from its main run loop. It’s spinning if the heartbeats stop.

The app I'm checking is a menubar item. Unfortunately it seems using its menu blocks the main run loop. Oh, well =/
