and I “hack” sidenotes into Google Docs via tedious usage of tables. Does any collab. editor do this well?

Dropbox paper deals with this kinda flow pretty well with their comments.

Hm, but sidenotes and comments are different things! Or you mean it might be an easier way to “hack” the layout?

Correct. An unresolved comment can easily be a sidenote. And you can tie them to specific chunks of text.

Hm, the comments are pretty visually noisy: the author’s avatar would be repeated on every sidenote!

I don’t know whether I’d consider that super noisy, but that’s the tradeoff I guess :)
