So and I “hack” sidenotes into Google Docs via tedious usage of tables. Does any collab. editor do this well?

have you tried Paper (from Dropbox)? You can do side comments, although I think longer comments collapse by default.

Sounds like it might be a more convenient hack. I guess we could use comments in Google Docs, too!

FWIW, Paper is the best collab. docs editor I’ve come across for technical work, we use it very heavily internally.
