Seems indicative of shifting expectations/demands that SICP used to be freshman course book; now it's considered "super advanced reading" :/

Its both... Advanced reading for a freshman, and there are better ways to learn those concepts.

I self taught, largely because my CS classes were so simplistic. For me, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy helped.

I interned at a research organization that had seriously good people to help me. One of my CS instructors was down the hall

My mentor in CS was ~10 years older than me, spent 3 years under a mentor of his own in Japan, and is ridiculously talented
