Are there any touch-based platformers with good interaction schemes? The fake d-pad thing is clearly not the right solution.

My favorites so far have been the endless runners that move forward on their own and use various taps for types of jumps

Kero Blaster, although more shooter than platformer. And a bunch of auto-runners, most notably Rayman Jungle/Fiesta Run.
