it's a dumb name but running the same code on the server and the client seems really good

I guess it’s appropriate for web apps. I can’t help but wonder if it increases coupling unnecessarily, though.

My question would be: does this create a disincentive toward a proper, supported API usable by other clients?

no. Your front end server should be where the isomorphic code lives and it should consume an API
