It's a release build at -O. I've had to switch debug builds from -O0 to -O as well because -O0 is completely unusable.

Yiiiikes. Does -Ounchecked help?

Not one bit! Most of the overhead seems to be from dictionaries—probably bookkeeping to maintain value semantics.
