in TextEdit, or just Xcode? 'cause I'd think it's the toolchain itself that is slow.

the whole OS. when i say "typing," a lot of that is e.g. cmd+tab, page-up, etc

Check for WindowServer process spinning cpu .. happens sometimes on Yosemite, makes input really slow.
