A weekly/daily standup is what you get when project leaders don't trust the people working for them to do their jobs.

Disagree partially: I think it's more an indication of poor communication tools and practices.

I think daily standups are trying to improve on latency, sync is just a side effect because it's easier to implement

Sure, but you can have low latency without standups if you establish effective async communication culture.
