100% speculation: maybe it's slow if you're not already using the discrete graphics hardware? Switching costs?

Sadly, that preference doesn’t always disable the rendering work done for the transparency effect even if it doesn’t display

I guess we may have to live with reduced transparency in our lives from now on.

Protip: for similar speedups in iOS 7 and later, just enable "Reduce Motion" ;)

man nuh uh i instrumented the shit out of that. it's like 0.2% cpu utilization when you're not waving your phone around
