A pipe operator is good for this: func |<T, U>(x: T, f: T -> U) -> U { return f(x) }; thingsOfThingsOfThings | flatten | flatten

If you have a mixture of global functions and instance methods (github.com/jspahrsummers/), that becomes less than ideal.
