I’ve been increasingly convinced that I’ll only be really happy long-term within a non-profit, but maybe this is a good compromise.

In what sense? It’d improve tax situations for you, too, and would be useful social signaling for customers.

I don't really know enough. But certainly it limits sources if you _do_ need funding, and complicates your own taxes.
