1 hour debugging later I found borderColor does not support implicit animation, but unlike shadowPath it is not doc'd. cc

The layer keys UIView implicitly animates: bounds, opacity, position, transform, contentsRect, contentsCenter, backgroundColor.

thanks. Please doc them. Now only shadowPath is doc’d to not support implicit animation. The wording implies others do.
