I absolutely did not appreciate much of what it was saying when I was a freshman. I’m not sure if that’s a failure on the book’s part.

SICP was a weird book to me because I read through it and absorbed a bunch of conceptual stuff, but no code at all

Like I learned no LISP from it. Maybe I benefited from reading it too early?
Also I think I stopped halfway through.

That's okay: learning LISP is not the point. Benefiting conceptually from e.g. its homoiconicity is!

I think that's natural. You must learn Calculus before you can understand it, for example.

to be fair, this is subtle stuff. how about maxwell's eqns? they are 150 years old and still a rite of passage. :)
