the parent will size me and all the choices work properly, but is any better/worse than the next?

What if being screen-sized is wrong? Is that *always* what you mean?

not sure what you mean? developer.apple.com/library/ios/#d -loadView's docs says not to call super.

I don’t mean to call super: I mean that it is the parent VC’s (or window’s) responsibility to size a VC’s view.
