Game designers have a strong culture of producing serious, insightful talks about their work.
By contrast, such talks seem much rarer from contemporary software designers. Why might that be? Or am I wrong—am I missing some incredible trove?

I see a similar parallel in physical things between architecture (serious journals, conferences, etc) and industrial design (no such thing).

I wonder if it boils down to a cultural phenomenon. "Serious" makers of computer stuff go in to HCI, people who want to "make stuff" go into design?

Hm… but if that were true, you'd expect to see the "serious" games studies people producing the deep talks, while the "make stuff" game designers mostly just ship. But in that space the "make stuff" people are making the good talks (for the most part)!

I think you're reading it differently than I meant. I think "make stuff" was the wrong name for it. The point I was trying to make is that generally, if you're really serious about software design, you go make games.
