thinking about the fact that most of my friends who drop out to become operators still want to continue learning math/physics, but it becomes exponentially harder to justify doing so in comparison to faster feedback loops in their other work.

I resonated with Nate Sauder's suggestion for why this occurs: such people are intellectually spent from their intense days, are trying to learn difficult material with a huge handicap. Contrast with when you take a week-long retreat, then find the stamina to study at length…

yes! but finding the time and space to go on a retreat without feeling guilty seems unsolved too…thank you for this perspective :)

I find that I get mentally stale if I don't take some kind of retreat-like period (n.b. not a holiday!) roughly once a quarter. FWIW: once I recognized that and pointed it out to my taskmaster parts, they agreed and stopped objecting.
