It's fun to think about where you'd actually care about this when designing a system. klotza.blogspot.com/2017/10/applic suggests the hydraulophone, where you make a tone by pushing down on a stream of water (tone propto both position and duration of blockage).

Imagine a communications network which charges you $1/mile/hour—i.e. if you're twice as far away, you pay double per unit time. That's basically an abasement rate.
