I'd certainly be very interested to see a prototype applying ZigZag to this specific problem.

I think broadly zigzag is one effective approach.
A portrayal of "hyperthoginal space" which both differentiates nodes of by type, allows any two nodes be bidirectionally connected with edges, and traversed through view "teleportation".
