Hi Andy. You mention the frustrated desire for an academic home, i.e. that CHI/UIST isn't it. Have you considered SPLASH ()? It's a diverse crowd and the OO heritage means I think would be open to your stuff. Not perfect, but suffers less "evaluation dogma" than most.

I experience that CHI/UIST not being welcome to systems work doesn't hold to the same degree anymore. James Landay's blogpost is over a decade old and change has happened. UIST has, e.g., done a great deal to help reviewers assess syst. contributions (see uist.acm.org/uist2021/cfp.h)

That's great to hear! A few other profs have said likewise, though they note that while folks who spend years on significant systems are more likely to see them accepted, they're at a disadvantage to others publishing incremental work at higher frequency. Curious how that jives?
That can be a concern, but I think it's not unique to computing research. I experience a great appreciation of deep systems work (also when hiring commt. are looking at a system researchers shorter pub. list). A danger I see of systems work is that it can be all consuming ...

and hereby risk that a (young) researcher doesn't get to work on other projects to get training in writing papers, getting reviews, collaborating with many different people, etc.
