This question's gauche, but: given the prevalence of $400k++ comp packages for ~30-year-olds in Big Tech, why aren't there lots more "gentle[wo]man scholars"? i.e. people quitting to do non-remunerative creative projects I can think of some, but shouldn't there be thousands?

To separate the economics question: There's lots (>10K) of STEM folks in SF Bay that have already made >$10M in stock options. How many became indy researchers/scholars?

Right! One thing I'm learning from DMs following this thread is that while it's pretty unusual for ICs at large public companies to achieve this outcome through comp, it's much more common for seed/A-stage employees via equity.
