This question's gauche, but: given the prevalence of $400k++ comp packages for ~30-year-olds in Big Tech, why aren't there lots more "gentle[wo]man scholars"? i.e. people quitting to do non-remunerative creative projects I can think of some, but shouldn't there be thousands?

If those 30 year olds have aspirations on home ownership in the Bay Area, they’re probably figuring out how to save $600k for the down payment :)

Six years ago… and I regret to say that yes, according to recent appraisals, all would be about the same today! Actually, the mortgage rates are better now.
