I impulsively decided to give public comment at the San Francisco Planning Commission today during their debate about implementing laws I wrote with in 2017 and 2018.

Probably a naive question, but curious: why does loss of local control come along with loss of public funding? Wouldn't the state's efforts to fix the problem if they had to stop in? Or is that a consequence of separate legislation?

Yea they’re independent. Not having a certified housing element has multiple, separate consequences. Good question!

The result is that cities should be motivated to do good Housing Elements no matter what their interests - whether to maintain local control, keep the funding, whatever.
